Background Burglary offences in the Avon and Somerset force area have reduced significantly over the last five years. However following a reduction in burglary by more than 60 per cent, the number of incidents are now on the increase. The British Crime Survey suggests that people now have a low fear of getting burgled. It is thought that this could be why there have been more offences recently. Unfortunately residents are becoming complacent when it comes to securing their property. Statistics show that around one in four of the burglaries committed in Avon and Somerset involve offenders gaining access through insecure doors and windows. Burglars are also targeting properties where valuable items are left in view. The most common items stolen are laptops, mobile phones, MP3 players, games consoles, money and jewellery. A third of all burglaries involve the theft of a laptop. Police have launched a campaign to raise awareness about the increase in burglaries and are advising people to secure their property to avoid becoming a victim of crime. www.secureyourmanor.org has been launched to raise awareness about the threat of burglary but more importantly offers advice on simple steps you can take to protect your home.
